IN THE NEWS - August 2003 Yoga Journal
The Avalon Inn and Spa was featured in the August 2003 Yoga Journal edition in the wellness section. If you desire to learn a new skill without needing much physical prowess, then cast your line in the direction of Vermont-based Avalon Adventure’s Fly Fishing and Yoga. “You learn how to read a Vermont river, information about dry and wet flies, what kind of gear to wear, how to select a rod, casting techniques, and much more,” says Samantha Grout, Spa Director and often outdoor guide. The Avalon has a full service spa and hosts several yoga-based outdoor retreats, including Snowshoeing and Yoga and Kayaking and Yoga. Guests first watch videos on the basics of fly fishing from experts at the Orvis Fly-Fishing Schools (Orvis, considered the Mercedes-Benz of fishing equipment is based in nearby Manchester) and then head out to practice their casting skills in the tepid, gurgling waters in the Northeast Kingdom region of Vermont: the Connecticut River, Clyde River, or Battenkill River. The retreat practices “catch and release” for the abundant population of rainbow trout and Vermont brook. The standard morning yoga classes are called “YogaShape,” a hybrid style of fast-paced fitness yoga that blends common yoga poses with Pilates moves. The home base for the retreats are The Avalon Inn and Spa where the yoga studio includes a high cathedral ceilings, soft maple wood floor, and large windows, and mirrors that flood the room with natural light. Don’t worry if your only experience with fly-fishing is watching “A River Runs Through It.” The retreats are designed to accompany both the novice and more experienced fly fisher, and are led by women fly-fishing guides or local professionals.
